Antoninus Pius vertraute auf Mark Aurels Urteil bei der Besetzung von Ämtern. Mark Aurel wurde durch seine stoischen Lehrer stark beeinflusst, was sich in seinen Selbstbetrachtungen widerspiegelt. Als Kaiser konzentrierte er sich auf eine gerechte Herrschaft und bekämpfte seine eigenen Unvollkommenheiten sowie Schicksalsschläge durch Reflexionen im Geiste der Stoa. Mark Aurels Herrschaft war geprägt von innerpolitischen Reformen und militärischen Herausforderungen an den Reichsgrenzen.
