Paulus von Tarsus war nach dem Neuen Testament ein erfolgreicher Missionar des Urchristentums und einer der ersten Theologen der Christentumsgeschichte. In der katholischen Kirche, den orthodoxen Kirchen, der koptischen und armenischen wie auch der anglikanischen Kirche wird er als Heiliger verehrt; die evangelischen Kirchen erinnern mit Gedenktagen an ihn.
Als griechisch gebildeter Jude und gesetzestreuer Pharisäer mit römischem Bürgerrecht verfolgte Paulus zunächst die Anhänger Jesu von Nazareth, dem er zur Zeit seines Wirkens nie begegnet war. Doch seit seiner Bekehrung verstand er sich als von Gott berufener Apostel des Evangeliums für die Völker . Als solcher verkündete er vor allem Nichtjuden den auferstandenen Jesus Christus. Dazu bereiste er den östlichen Mittelmeerraum und gründete dort einige christliche Gemeinden. Durch seine Briefe, die einen wesentlichen Teil des späteren NT bilden, blieb er mit ihnen in Kontakt.
Diese ältesten erhaltenen neutestamentlichen Schriften haben Kirchenväter wie Augustinus von Hippo, Theologen wie Martin Luther und Karl Barth sowie Philosophen wie Sören Kierkegaard oder Karl Jaspers geprägt und damit die europäische Geistesgeschichte stark beeinflusst. Seit der Aufklärung sehen viele Denker in Paulus den eigentlichen Gründer des Christentums. Seine neue Lehre enthält in wichtigen Teilen Aspekte der griechischen Philosophie und des persischen Dualismus , die er mit Eigeninterpretationen des Tanach zur so sprichwörtlich gewordenen paulinischen Theologie vermischt. Besonders wichtig für die Entwicklung des Christentums ist die paulinische Lehre von der Rechtfertigung des Menschen und seiner Versöhnung mit Gott sowie seine Sündentheologie, welche als Grundlage der späteren kirchlichen Erbsündenlehre gilt. Diese Themen wurden in unterschiedlichen Interpretationen Grundbausteine für die Lehre vieler Konfessionen.
Der Mehrheit der Forscher gilt die Historizität des Paulus als gesichert.
