Bob Dylan [ˈdɪlən] ist ein US-amerikanischer Musiker und Lyriker. Er gilt als einer der einflussreichsten Musiker des 20. Jahrhunderts. „Für seine poetischen Neuschöpfungen in der großen amerikanischen Songtradition“ wurde ihm 2016 als erstem Musiker der Nobelpreis für Literatur zuerkannt.

Dylan ist Sänger und spielt Gitarre, Mundharmonika, Orgel sowie Klavier. Nachdem er seine ersten Erfolge als Folkmusiker erzielt hatte, wandte er sich Mitte der 1960er Jahre der Rockmusik zu, schöpfte aber im Laufe seiner Karriere auch aus anderen Musiktraditionen wie Country, Blues, Gospel und dem Great American Songbook. Dylans Texte im Verbund mit der musikalischen Darbietung und Aufführungspraxis zeichnen sich durch vielschichtige Bezugsebenen aus, in denen high culture und popular culture aufeinandertreffen. In sein Werk eingewoben sind Referenzen auf zahllose Gestalten der amerikanischen und europäischen Musik- und Literaturgeschichte, darunter beispielsweise Hank Williams, James Joyce, Woody Guthrie, Ovid, Merle Haggard, William Shakespeare, Jerry Lee Lewis, Arthur Rimbaud, John Lennon, Homer, Billy Joe Shaver, Petrarca oder Frank Sinatra. Sowohl das in der Kombination vielfältiger Traditionslinien sehr eigenständige, erfindungsreiche Werk Dylans als auch die rätselbehaftete Persönlichkeit des Singer-Songwriters führten zu einer in ihrer Gesamtheit kaum mehr überschaubaren kulturellen und geisteswissenschaftlichen Rezeption.
