Gilbert Ryle war einer der einflussreichsten britischen Philosophen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er lehrte an der Universität Oxford. Ryle gilt zusammen mit John Langshaw Austin und Ludwig Wittgenstein als Hauptvertreter der Ordinary Language Philosophy oder Philosophie der normalen Sprache, die neben der Idealsprachenphilosophie eine der beiden klassischen Strömungen der analytischen Philosophie darstellt. In der Tradition von George Edward Moore und Ludwig Wittgenstein wird hier versucht, unter Bezug auf den alltäglichen oder normalen Sprachgebrauch philosophische Probleme durch Sprach- bzw.
