Henri Philippe Benoni Omer Joseph Pétain war ein französischer Militär, Diplomat und Politiker. Von 1940 bis 1944 stand er als Staatschef dem autoritären État français vor.

Während des Ersten Weltkriegs avancierte Pétain aufgrund seiner Abwehrerfolge in der Schlacht um Verdun zum gefeierten Nationalhelden und wurde 1917 Oberbefehlshaber der französischen Armee. In der Zwischenkriegszeit prägte er als einflussreicher Marschall von Frankreich sowie in verschiedenen militärischen Ämtern die Verteidigungsdoktrin seines Landes entscheidend mit.

Im Verlauf der sich abzeichnenden französischen Niederlage gegen das nationalsozialistische Deutsche Reich wurde Pétain am 16. Juni 1940 letzter Regierungschef der Dritten Republik und erwirkte den Waffenstillstand von Compiègne. Anschließend übernahm er von 1940 bis 1944 als Chef de l’État mit nahezu absoluten Vollmachten die Führung des mit dem Reich kollaborierenden État français in Vichy und proklamierte in der Révolution Nationale den Bruch des republikanisch-demokratischen Prinzips in Frankreich. Mit dem politischen Aufstieg Pierre Lavals büßte Pétain seine unumschränkte Machtstellung ab 1942 ein.

Wegen der Kollaboration wurde Pétain 1945 zum Tode verurteilt. Die Strafe wurde jedoch in eine lebenslange Freiheitsstrafe umgewandelt. Wikipedia
