Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz war ein schweizerisch-amerikanischer Naturforscher.

Agassiz war einer der ersten international renommierten US-amerikanischen Wissenschaftler und Ehemann der Erzieherin Elizabeth Cary Agassiz. Bekannt ist er vor allem wegen seiner bahnbrechenden Eiszeitstudien sowie seiner Leistungen als Ichthyologe und Hochschullehrer. Von ihm stammt die Wortwendung, dass Gletscher „die große Pflugschar Gottes“ seien.

In neuerer Zeit wurden auch Agassiz’ Ansichten über die menschlichen Rassen diskutiert. Wikipedia
