Jean Paul Marat Zitate

Jean Paul Marat war ein französischer Arzt, Naturwissenschaftler und Verfasser naturwissenschaftlicher und politischer Schriften. Während der Französischen Revolution verlegte und schrieb er den Ami du Peuple, eine demagogische Zeitung, in der er zur Hinrichtung amtierender Minister sowie später auch des Königs und seiner Familie aufrief. Er war auf Seiten der Montagnards Abgeordneter im Nationalkonvent sowie für eine Periode Präsident des Klubs der Jakobiner.

Mit seinen Agitationen war er ein Sprachrohr der Sansculotten. Er wurde für die Septembermassaker verantwortlich gemacht; man konnte ihm jedoch nicht nachweisen, sie auch tatsächlich initiiert zu haben. Durch seine Ermordung wurde er zum „Märtyrer der Revolution“, und seine sterblichen Überreste wurden ein paar Monate lang im Panthéon aufbewahrt. Wikipedia

“The people are never voluntary slaves, they yield not to power, but when they believe it to be a duty, or are unable to oppose it. Hence in a state newly founded or reformed, the subjects are not at once enslaved, however imperfect the constitution might be. Despair, that prompted them at first to throw off the yoke, would prompt them to throw it off anew whenever they should feel its weight.
