Elena Ferrante ist das Pseudonym einer italienischen Schriftstellerin, die sich unter Wahrung ihrer Anonymität seit den 1990er Jahren als Romanautorin einen Namen gemacht hat. Mit ihrer Neapolitanischen Saga gelang ihr der internationale Durchbruch, sowohl auf dem Buchmarkt als auch bei der Literaturkritik. Das Nachrichtenmagazin Time zählte sie 2016 zu den 100 einflussreichsten Personen weltweit.
In Interviews, die bis auf eine Ausnahme schriftlich geführt wurden, hat Ferrante sich ausführlich über ihr künstlerisches Schaffen geäußert. Dabei hat sie auch einige wenige Informationen zu ihrer Person preisgegeben, so unter anderem, dass sie aus Neapel stamme und nicht hauptberuflich Schriftstellerin sei.
