Gabrielle „Coco“ Chanel war eine international bekannte französische Modedesignerin und Unternehmerin.

Coco Chanel gründete Anfang der 1910er Jahre das Modeimperium Chanel und gilt als herausragende Persönlichkeit der Modegeschichte. Sie wurde aufgrund ihres Einflusses auf die Welt der Mode, insbesondere die Haute Couture, 1999 als einzige Person ihrer Berufsgruppe auf der von der US-Zeitschrift Time veröffentlichten Liste der 100 einflussreichsten Personen des 20. Jahrhunderts aufgeführt.

Ab 1913 war sie Wegbereiterin einer damals nahezu revolutionären, funktionellen Damenmode mit wadenlangem Rock oder luftiger Hose, lose gegürtetem Oberteil und Kurzhaarschnitt für selbstbewusste, moderne Frauen. In den 1920er Jahren kreierte Coco Chanel das „kleine Schwarze“, das noch immer einen Klassiker in der Damenmode darstellt. 1922 brachte sie das Parfüm Chanel Nº 5 auf den Markt, das als meistverkauftes der Welt gilt. Ab Mitte der 1950er Jahre wurde ihr Chanel-Kostüm mit einem losen, meist bordierten Tweed-Jäckchen und einem ausgestellten Rock weltbekannt.
