Aristides de Sousa Mendes war ein portugiesischer Diplomat. Als Generalkonsul in Bordeaux rettete er im Zweiten Weltkrieg schätzungsweise 30.000 Menschen verschiedener Nationalitäten, darunter 10.000 Juden, das Leben. Er gilt als der „portugiesische Schindler“ und wird als einer der Gerechten unter den Völkern geehrt.
