Gilmore ist ferner ein Hauptmitarbeiter des GNU-Projektes und Initiator der alt.*-Hierarchie im Usenet.
Gilmore ist Preisträger des von der Free Software Foundation verliehenen Free Software Awards für die Förderung freier Software des Jahres 2009.
