Edward Gough Whitlam AC QC war der 21. Premierminister Australiens. Seine Amtszeit dauerte vom 5. Dezember 1972 bis zum 11. November 1975. Vom 8. Februar 1967 bis zum 5. Dezember 1972 sowie vom 11. November 1975 bis zum 22. Dezember 1977 war er der Oppositionsführer. Bislang war er der einzige australische Premierminister, welcher vom Generalgouverneur seines Amtes enthoben wurde.
Gough Whitlam ist bis heute eine der umstrittensten politischen Persönlichkeiten der australischen Geschichte. Auch rückblickend entzünden sich an seiner Politik immer noch hitzige Debatten zwischen ihren Befürwortern und Gegnern.
