Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Queen Elizabeth war als Gemahlin König Georgs VI. von 1923 bis 1936 Herzogin von York, von 1936 bis 1952 Königin von Großbritannien und Nordirland und bis 1948 Kaiserin von Indien. Sie war die Mutter von Königin Elisabeth II. und deren jüngerer Schwester Prinzessin Margaret.

Als Queen Consort war sie keine eigenständig regierende Monarchin, sondern blieb offiziell Untertanin ihres Ehemannes. Nach dessen Tod 1952 wurde sie bekannt als Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother , um die Verwechslung einerseits mit ihrer seit 1952 regierenden Tochter Königin Elisabeth II. und andererseits mit ihrer damals noch lebenden Schwiegermutter Maria von Teck zu vermeiden, die seit dem Tode ihres Gemahles den Titel Queen Dowager trug, diesen Titel aber offiziell nie angenommen hatte. Sie fand sich zudem für den Titel einer Königinwitwe zu jung. Im Volksmund hieß sie seither Queen Mum.
