Thích Nhất Hạnh war ein vietnamesischer buddhistischer Mönch, Schriftsteller und Lyriker. Er war ein zeitgenössischer Vertreter der buddhistischen Lehre und engagierte sich für einen "engagierten Buddhismus". Neben seiner Tätigkeit als Mönch gründete er verschiedene Organisationen und Schulen, die beim Aufbau von Schulen und Krankenhäusern in ländlichen Gebieten halfen. Thích Nhất Hạnh veröffentlichte zahlreiche Bücher, die in vielen Sprachen übersetzt wurden und sich an ein Laienpublikum in Europa und Amerika richteten.

1949 wurde Thích Nhất Hạnh zum Mönch ordiniert und interessierte sich neben den Texten der Mahayana-Tradition auch für Schriften anderer Schulen. Er war einer der Gründer des An Quang Buddhist Institute und hatte Kontakt zu französischen Soldaten. Aufgrund seines Engagements für den Frieden in Vietnam wurde er zur persona non grata erklärt und musste im Exil bleiben. In Frankreich gründete er die Landkommune "Les Patates douces" und das Praxiszentrum "Plum Village", wo jedes Jahr Retreats stattfinden. Thích Nhất Hạnh setzte sich auch für medizinische Versorgung in Vietnam ein und unterstützte die Boat People. Im Januar 2005 kehrte er nach 39 Jahren Exil nach Vietnam zurück. Er initiierte das Europäische Institut für Angewandten Buddhismus und erwarb dafür ein historisches Gebäude, das früher eine Pflegeanstalt beherbergte. 2014 erlitt er einen schweren Schlaganfall und zog sich aus der Öffentlichkeit zurück. Thích Nhất Hạnh starb am 15. Januar 2022 im Từ Hiếu-Tempel, in dem er zum Mönch ordiniert wurde.
