Peter Brian Gabriel ist ein britischer Musiker, Komponist und Texter, Video-Künstler und Aktivist der Humanitären Hilfe. Bekannt wurde er in den frühen 1970er Jahren als Sänger, Frontmann und Gründungsmitglied der damaligen Progressive-Rock-Band Genesis. Zudem spielt er Querflöte, Oboe und Keyboards.
Nach seinem Weggang von Genesis im Herbst 1975 startete er eine erfolgreiche Solokarriere. Der Schwerpunkt lag auf der Produktion und Förderung von Weltmusik, sowohl seine eigene Musik aber auch die anderer Künstler betreffend. Zudem nahm er eine Vorreiterrolle im Bereich der digital bearbeiteten Musik ein. Seine Musik, eine nicht klar kategorisierbare Mischung aus Pop und Rock mit progressiven Elementen und deutlichen Einflüssen der Weltmusik, stellte er aufwendig in spektakulären Videos und konzeptionell choreografierten Liveshows dar.
Peter Gabriel engagiert sich für Menschenrechte, unter anderem bei Amnesty International und der von ihm mitbegründeten Menschenrechtsorganisation Witness. Wikipedia
