Diana, Princess of Wales war als erste Ehefrau des derzeitigen britischen Thronfolgers Charles von 1981 bis 1996 Kronprinzessin des Vereinigten Königreiches. Aus Dianas Ehe mit Charles stammen die Söhne William und Harry, der eigentlich Henry heißt. Im deutschen Volksmund wird Diana bis heute nicht nur als Prinzessin Diana, sondern oft auch als Lady Diana oder Lady Di bezeichnet, obwohl sie seit der Hochzeit den Titel „Lady“ nicht mehr führte.

Schon zu Lebzeiten erlangte Diana den Status einer Medienikone und wurde weltweit so populär, dass sie zeitweise als die berühmteste und am häufigsten fotografierte Frau der Welt galt. Während sie sich zu einem Medienstar entwickelte, litt ihre Ehe mit Prinz Charles unter einer schweren Krise. Die Ehe des Kronprinzenpaares scheiterte letztlich, die offizielle Trennung wurde 1992 bekanntgegeben. Die Skandale der 1990er Jahre, die aus Dianas und Charles’ Konflikt resultierten, fügten der britischen Monarchie erheblichen Schaden zu. Mit der Scheidung 1996 verlor Diana ihren Rang als Königliche Hoheit, blieb jedoch ein Mitglied der Königsfamilie.Während der 1980er Jahre hatte Diana zahlreiche Wohltätigkeitsprojekte wie zum Beispiel die britische AIDS-Hilfe unterstützt. Nach ihrer Scheidung von Prinz Charles engagierte sie sich für die Abschaffung von Landminen und widmete sich weiterhin benachteiligten Menschen.In der Nacht zum 31. August 1997 prallte der Wagen, in dem Diana mit ihrem damaligen Lebensgefährten Dodi Al-Fayed saß, mit überhöhter Geschwindigkeit gegen einen Pfeiler im Autotunnel unter der Place de l’Alma in Paris. Diana starb an den Folgen innerer Verletzungen und die Nachricht ihres Todes löste weltweit eine Welle des Schocks und des Mitgefühls aus. Das Ereignis hatte verheerende Folgen für das Ansehen des Königshauses, da dessen Mitglieder aufgrund ihrer als herzlos wahrgenommenen Contenance massiver Kritik ausgesetzt waren. Entgegen den Regeln des Protokolls wurde für Diana in Anbetracht der überwältigenden Trauer in der Bevölkerung am 6. September 1997 eine öffentliche Beisetzungszeremonie organisiert.Nach ihrem Tod erhielt Diana den Beinamen „Königin der Herzen“, den im 17. Jahrhundert schon Elisabeth Stuart, die Frau des „Winterkönigs“ Friedrich V., trug. Wikipedia
