George Roger Waters ist ein britischer Sänger, Bassist, Komponist, Texter und Musikproduzent. Bekanntheit erlangte er als Mitglied der Rockgruppe Pink Floyd, die er mitgründete.

Waters schreibt meist melancholische Texte, die häufig persönliche Erfahrungen mit einer beißenden und sarkastischen Gesellschaftskritik verbinden. Sie sind von einer pessimistischen Sicht auf die moderne Gesellschaft gekennzeichnet. Das Album The Wall weist autobiografische Teile aus Waters’ Leben auf. Das letzte Pink-Floyd-Album mit Waters, The Final Cut, entwickelt einige der Themen aus The Wall weiter und ist seinem Vater gewidmet.

Sein Jugendfreund und Bandkollege Syd Barrett und dessen psychische Probleme haben Waters ebenfalls sehr beeinflusst und wurden in mehreren Werken verarbeitet: Barrett wurde das Album Wish You Were Here von 1975 gewidmet, dessen Titelstück wie auch Shine On You Crazy Diamond sich auf ihn beziehen. Außerdem nimmt bereits das vorhergegangene Konzeptalbum The Dark Side of the Moon Bezug auf Barretts Verfassung. Wikipedia
