Richard A. D'Aveni is the Bakala Professor of Strategy at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. His areas of research include competitive strategy at multiple levels of competition: individuals, teams, corporations, militaries, governments, spheres of influence/alliances, and even competition between capitalist systems.

He is the author of articles in academic journals, Harvard Business Review, The Financial Times of London, The Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and the MIT Sloan Management Review, as well as the book Hyper-competition, which is available in 11 languages. He released Beating the Commodity Trap: How to Maximize Your Competitive Position and Increase Your Pricing Power in early 2010. He also wrote Strategic Supremacy, currently available in 4 languages.His most recent book, Strategic Capitalism: The New Economic Strategy for Winning the Capitalist Cold War, was published in September 2012. This book discusses the differences in American and Chinese forms of capitalism, how the Chinese system has flipped many American advantages into disadvantages, and how America might respond. “From microchips to corn chips, software to soft drinks, and packaged goods to package delivery services, executives have watched the intensity and type of competition in their industries shift during the last few years. Industries have changed from slow moving, stable oligopolies to environments, characterized by intense and rapid competitive moves, in which competitors strike quickly with unexpected, unconventional means of competing. They now confront “hypercompetitors” who continuously generate new competitive advantages that destroy, make obsolete, or neutralize the industry leader’s advantages, leaving the industry in disequilibrium and disarray.”
