Rabbi Yehuda Leib HaLevi Ashlag, war der größteKabbalist des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ashlag interpretierte die Kabbala systematisch neu. Er ist der Autor des „Talmud Eser Sefirot“ und des bedeutendsten und umfangreichsten Kommentars zum Buch Zohar, dem Sulam-Kommentar , der ersten Enthüllung der vollständigen Methode für den spirituellen Aufstieg. Deshalb wird Ashlag auch Baal HaSulam genannt.
