John D. Carmack II ist ein US-amerikanischer Programmierer und Spieleentwickler. Er wurde durch die Entwicklung innovativer Game-Engines im Computerspielebereich bekannt. Er ist Mitgründer von id Software, dem Studio, das die ersten Ego-Shooter entwickelte. Nebenbei gründete er 2000 die Raketenbaufirma Armadillo Aerospace. Im August 2013 wurde er als Chief Technology Officer bei Oculus VR eingestellt. Im November 2013 verließ Carmack id Software.
