„The goal of providing basic literacy and education to all the world’s people is still the most basic development challenge.“

„It is often asserted that discussion is only possible between people who have a common language and accept common basic assumptions. I think that this is a mistake.“

—  Karl Popper Austrian-British philosopher of science 1902 - 1994
Context: It is often asserted that discussion is only possible between people who have a common language and accept common basic assumptions. I think that this is a mistake. All that is needed is a readiness to learn from one's partner in the discussion, which includes a genuine wish to understand what he intends to say. If this readiness is there, the discussion will be the more fruitful the more the partner's backgrounds differ. p. 352

„People don't think. My goal in work is to make them think. The media do the opposite.“

—  Terry Gilliam American-born British screenwriter, film director, animator, actor and member of the Monty Python comedy troupe 1940
Context: I like the Coen brothers. Their films are smart and disturbing. I am very impressed by what George Clooney is doing now. He is very political. I like the fact that he did Oceans Eleven and Oceans Twelve, made all that money and then leveraged the money and his success into interesting projects. Johnny Depp has also set up a production company and is showing an interest in risky projects that will not be easy. I am sorry that it is hard for the average person, and even for an above-average person, to see a film that is not a Hollywood production. You see those films only in the festivals. There are few people there. That is worrying. People don't think. My goal in work is to make them think. The media do the opposite.

„If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or objects.“

—  Albert Einstein German-born physicist and founder of the theory of relativity 1879 - 1955
As quoted by Ernst Straus in Einstein: A Centenary Volume by A.P. French (1980), p. 32. Variant: "if you want to be a happy man, you should tie your life to a goal, not to other people and not to things." „I think the big mistake in schools is trying to teach children anything, and by using fear as the basic motivation.“

—  Stanley Kubrick American film director, screenwriter, producer, cinematographer and editor 1928 - 1999
Context: I think the big mistake in schools is trying to teach children anything, and by using fear as the basic motivation. Fear of getting failing grades, fear of not staying with your class, etc. Interest can produce learning on a scale compared to fear as a nuclear explosion to a firecracker. Quoted in Stanley Kubrick at Look Magazine (2013) by Phillipe Mather, p. 46

„I don’t think that we are a species or a people that can exist without making mistakes somewhere along the line.“

—  Harry Belafonte American singer 1927
Context: I don’t think that we are a species or a people that can exist without making mistakes somewhere along the line. Some make mistakes that are greater than others. But I do believe that we should have the courage and the ability to look at something that we did, even if in the first instance we believed it, when in the wake of the aftermath and the truth, you find out that that was not the case, to then say, 'Let me go back and examine what led me to this conclusion. What gods was I serving? What masters was I serving? What was it all about?' and then try to be more instructive to people who will listen to you. As quoted in Democracy Now! interview by Amy Goodman (30 January 2006)
