Johnny Cash war einer der einflussreichsten US-amerikanischen Country-Sänger und Songschreiber. Er trat auch in einigen Filmen und Fernsehserien als Schauspieler auf.
Cash ist bekannt für seine markante Bassbariton-Stimme und den sogenannten „Boom-Chicka-Boom“-Sound seiner Begleitband Tennessee Three sowie seine kritischen und unkonventionellen Texte. Sein musikalisches Spektrum reicht von den 1950er Jahren mit Country, Gospel, Rockabilly, Blues, Folk und Pop bis hin zum Alternative Country Anfang des 21. Jahrhunderts. Legendär sind seine Konzerte in den Gefängnissen Folsom und San Quentin Ende der 1960er Jahre.
